What I want people with Vitiligo to know

Hello there, my fellow Vitiligo friend.

Are you frustrated by the general lack of helpful and reliable information available to you about your condition?

I feel you.

My journey with Vitiligo has been one that has taken me on countless roller-coaster rides of self-doubt, frustration and shame. It’s time for us all to get off.

I have spent years of research to get where I am and I want to share what I’ve learned with you:

  1. Do your research

Unless you’ve been lucky enough to find an actual specialist in Vitiligo, the sad reality is many dermatologists and doctors don’t have a great understanding of how to treat the condition and, in some instances, may prescribe a treatment which could actually make your skin worse.

I cannot stress enough just how important it is to do your own research.

Even in times of desperation… wait. Don’t just take on any advice without properly understanding what you’re getting into. Heck, don’t even trust my advice without researching it for yourself first!

Keep in mind when searching on the web, you’re going to come across hundreds of sites claiming to “have a cure”, but unfortunately many of these are not legitimate and are potentially unsafe.

Because the reality is NO magic pill or quick-fix will ever restore your pigment.

The good news is there are treatments available which are safe and actually work, you just need to find the right person to make it happen.

I personally recommend my own doctor, Professor Schallreuter, who has a centre specifically dedicated to research and treatment for Vitiligo patients and has helped me both physically and in restoring my confidence.

  1. Take your health into your own hands

My personal view is that while treatment works, taking care of my health holistically is essential so that I don’t trigger the condition again.

Because ultimately, it IS a lifestyle choice. While my doctor has helped immensely in treating my condition, the fact is restoring my health is MY responsibility and I’ve found when my body is in balance, it will respond to treatment much better than if it was not.

Doctors are amazing for what they do, but remember a balanced, nutrient-dense diet, movement, adequate rest, keeping harmful toxins away and connection with others are all key factors in restoring health too.

I believe our body’s natural state is to heal itself – sometimes, we just get in the way of it!

  1. Your skin doesn’t actually matter

You might not believe it right this second, but lemme tell you, it’s absolutely the truth.

You’re already complete and worthy of living the life you’ve always wanted.

You don’t need perfectly even-toned skin to be able to enjoy this life.

So take a deep breath, let the weight leave your shoulders, and allow yourself to feel good again.

Relax in the knowledge that you can treat this condition slowly over time.

Because I’ll let you in on a little secret – the real miracle happens when your mindset changes and you no longer see yourself as being flawed or lacking.

So, now what?

Ask yourself – what’s one positive change you can make today towards a healthier, more rockin’ life?
